The scheme was rolled out in September with assistance from JLT Insurance and has been funded by the current male players, who committed $500,000 towards the scheme over the next two years.
Previous to the scheme, female contracted players were encouraged to take out the top level of health cover but needed to foot the bill themselves. It has already had a significant impact on reducing some of the financial burden on female players and also state organisations through lower injury payment costs.
The BUPA Private Health offering is a dedicated and comprehensive hospital and extras cover designed to support the female players on and off the field.
Southern Stars vice-captain Alex Blackwell joined Patricia Karvelas on ABC Radio National Drive to talk about the new scheme. Listen here.
