New Zealand has defeated the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars by seven runs in their first match of the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 in Sylhet, Bangladesh.
Batting first New Zealand set a total of 8-128, with Katie Perkins (31) and Frances Mackay (25) anchoring the side’s innings. Some big hitting late in the piece by Nicola Browne (29) helped push their total beyond 100. The wickets were shared evenly among the Australians with Sarah Coyte (2-8) and Jess Jonassen (2-22) the multiple wicket-takers.
The Australian side trailed the required run rate for much of their innings, thanks to the loss of key early wickets. Alyssa Healy (41) and Alex Blackwell (31) put on a 45-run partnership but it was not enough to chase down the target, with the team finishing all out for 121 with three balls to spare.
New Zealand’s Nicola Browne was named player-of-the-match for her 29 runs and 1-11.
