Former Australia Test batsman Dav Whatmore has been appointed Zimbabwe's head coach for the 2015 Cricket World Cup.

The 60-year-old replaces Stephen Mangongo, who was removed from the position just before Christmas.

The African nation is the latest addition to a long list of head coaching roles, which also includes Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Whatmore has been a prolific coach over the years, famously leading Sri Lanka to their 1996 World Cup triumph, before revitalising Bangladesh cricket by producing their first ever series win and steering them to the Super Eights at the 2007 Cricket World Cup.

His lengthy career included seven Tests for Australia in 1969 and 108 first-class appearances with Victoria.

He retired from the game in 1989 to pursue a career in coaching.
