Greats congratulate Ponting

3 July, 2018

Tributes flow for Ricky Ponting from a range of cricket people, including former Australian captains and former teammates after he was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame.

Steve Waugh

"Ricky Ponting was destined to be inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame the moment he debuted for Tasmania. Cricket pulses through his veins and revealed itself in his incredible dedication to training, his fearless and skilful batsmanship and his tactical acumen as a leader. Congrats and welcome to the club, Punter."

Simon Katich

"Punter was without doubt the toughest player I saw first-hand during my career. He was obviously extremely talented from a young age but that talent was matched with an insatiable work rate and desire to be the best not only with the bat but also in the field.

Regardless of how much he had already achieved through his career, he was still the hardest worker right until the end, proving how strong his desire was to never be satisfied.
It was a huge honour to have played under his leadership and witness first-hand one of the greatest knocks in Test history in Manchester in the 2005 Ashes."

Shane Watson

"A huge congratulations to Ricky on the highest accolade someone can achieve in world cricket. He was the fiercest competitor that I ever played with and he always lead by example on and off the field, which is why I feel so privileged to have played under one of the true greats of the modern game."

Lisa Sthalekar

"It is only fitting that a player who inspired so many generations is acknowledged for his contributions by being inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame. Everyone wanted to bat like him, field like him and captain like him. Well done on your latest achievement."

Damien Fleming

"He was a Hall of Fame certainty. He was the best Aussie batsman of our era comfortably. He was such an attacking player. He set up Test matches, ODIs and he led from the front. I remember as a young bloke, coming into the team that his was the voice you heard louder than any teammate."

Jason Gillespie

"Ricky thoroughly deserves this accolade. A fine player, a fine leader yet most importantly a fine man. A fantastic guy to have in your team - never gave an inch, never took a backward step and was brilliant around the team always helping his teammates improve their games."

Greg Dyer

"Ricky is not only one of Australia's greats, but is also one of the best to ever play the game. A true modern master, Rick put an indelible stamp on the game and helped shaped the way in which it is played today. He sits comfortably alongside the immortals on the list of ICC Hall of Fame members. A truly worthy recipient."

Brendan Drew

"I was fortunate to play alongside Ricky during my time with Tasmania and the team always took plenty of energy from having him around. The way Ricky trained was really impressive to see, whether that be helping players around him or training as hard as anyone, even in his last few years. His induction into the ICC Hall of Fame is a great testament to one of the game's best."

Paul Marsh - Former ACA CEO

"Ricky Ponting had a bigger impact on Australian cricket and our players than anyone in my time in the game. A genuine champion in every sense of the word, his induction is an overdue honour."
