NSW win 46th Sheffield Shield

25 Mar 2014

The NSW Blues are the 2013/14 Bupa Sheffield Shield champions after the Final against Western Australia finished in a draw.

With day four only allowing fourteen overs of play due to rain, NSW looked to clinch their 46th Sheffield Shield title in Canberra by batting out the final day.

With Smith and Patterson resuming at 3-59, under overcast skies, the Warriors realised that only a freakish performance with the ball could give them a chance. Unfortunately, for the men from the West this didn’t materialise as both Smith and Patterson saw off the initial burst of pace with few problems. Smith, looked in the form of his life and confirmed his great recent record at this ground by cruising to another half century, while Patterson played several stylish drives as he too reached 50.

The partnership had grown to 91 when Patterson cut a ball uppishly from Marcus North to depart for an excellent 52.

Smith (72no) and Henriques (5no) then took the Blues to lunch at 4-159, with a lead of 426.

The match was finally declared a draw shortly after the lunch break, but not before Smith raised a well deserved century. The NSW captain finished on 103 not out with seven fours and two sixes, with Moises Henriques at the other end on 10.

Henriques was named Player of the Match for his first innings century which helped NSW to an excellent first innings total of 447 all out. The all-rounder also claimed the crucial wicket of Shaun Marsh during Western Australia's first innings.
