Redmayne pulls off last round heroics to win WNCL Captains MVP

7 February, 2019

Tasmania’s Georgia Redmayne has won the 2018/19 ACA WNCL Captain’s MVP award, after receiving the full ten votes from the Captains in Round five.

Going into the final weekend of matches nine votes behind leader Heather Graham, Redmayne produced a match winning 77, which was enough to receive full votes from the skippers Brooke Hepburn and Chloe Piparo.

Western Australia’s Graham had a lean weekend, missing out on votes in her side’s heavy defeats to Tasmania and Queensland.

Redmayne said she was thrilled to be voted as the MVP by the Captains.

"It is a huge honour to receive any award voted by your peers, but in particular the captains and leaders of the game.

"I have so much respect for all the Captains in the WNCL; they are all players that I look up to and admire.”

Redmayne could count herself unlucky not to be participating in this weekend’s WNCL final, after Tasmania missed -out by just a bonus point. While disappointed, she said that the 2018-19 improvement was a positive sign for Tasmania cricket.

"It’s definitely been our most successful year for Tassie, and personally I really enjoyed being part of the improvement our team showed this year.

“I am so proud of the girls and their efforts, and although we are devastated to miss out on the final, I think the improvement we showed is a really positive step forward.

From northern New South Wales, Redmayne credited her improvement over the last few years with the Tasmanian coaching staff, and her time in the Australia A squad.

“When I first came in to the Tassie team, I had a lot of support and backing from the coaching staff there.

"That gave me a lot of confidence, and as each season has gone on, I have learnt about my own game a bit more.

"I was really fortunate to go on the Australia A tour to India this year, that was a big turning point in my season.

"Before that I was pretty short on form, but I got a lot of help over there from Leah Poulton who assisted me with a few technical things, and since then I have felt really good.”

Early season leader Heather Graham finished second in the Captain’s MVP on 27 votes with South Australia’s Tahlia McGrath finishing third on 24 votes, after a consistent 2018-19 campaign.

Tasmania’s Corrine Hall came in fourth, topping-off a vastly improved 2018-19, while ACT’s Angela Reakes pipped teammate Claire Koski for fifth.

The WNCL final is on this weekend with Queensland Fire playing perennial champions New South Wales Breakers, attempting to win their 20th title.

The game starts at 10am this Saturday at the North Sydney Oval.
