Footscray Edgewater batsman Travis Dean is in line to make his first-class debut after being selected in the Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers 12-man squad for the opening Sheffield Shield match against Queensland that begins tomorrow at the MCG.
Dean, who was handed a Victorian contract in April, struck an unbeaten 217 and 63 in Victoria’s Toyota Futures League match against Western Australia last week and looks set to fill one of the batting positions left by retiring duo Chris Rogers and David Hussey and become the 843rd player to represent the state in first-class cricket.
The leading wicket-taker in the Sheffield Shield last season, Fawad Ahmed, has also got the nod ahead of Jon Holland, who was the best performed spin bowler in the Matador BBQs One-Day Cup.
The Bushrangers have made three changes from the 12-man squad that won Victoria’s 29th Sheffield Shield title in March with Dean, John Hastings and Glenn Maxwell replacing Rogers, Hussey and Cameron White, while Aaron Finch has also been left out.
The Victoria v Queensland match will be a day/night clash using a pink ball with play beginning at 2pm.
